The $30-million development would feature 88 one-, two- and three-bedroom condo units in the $260,000 to $540,000 range. Construction dates have not yet been set.

The Select Inn has been the location of repeated problems over the years, requiring some 107 emergency police visits in 2003 alone. "We have a vision that is shared by many, to help restore the Eleven Mile corridor and build upon the assets of the Farmer's Market, church, local businesses, other residential developments and neighborhoods that anchor downtown Royal Oak," Strosberg says.

The Select Inn was closed earlier this year, pending a possible development plan. Morningside was the only developer to put forward a proposal. The city planning commission has endorsed the project.

Chicago-based Morningside Group also developed SkyLofts Royal Oak on Main Street in downtown Royal Oak, which quickly sold out last year.
