The Broad Institute, a partnership between MIT, Harvard and affiliated hospitals, and the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, will relocate to the building from 320 Charles St. The institute was established in 2003 to create tools for genomic medicine.

The site is currently a parking lot at the intersection of Main and Ames streets. It is the last parcel in Boston Properties' Cambridge Center, a 2.7 million sf master-planned mixed-use urban center. It is located at the center of Kendall Square, immediately adjacent to MIT. The 24-acre site contains retail, restaurants, hotel facilities, and public parks and gardens with on-site rapid transit access to the Kendall Station of the MBTA Red Line.

Completion of the Seven Cambridge Center will take approximately two years. About 60% of the space at the new location will be dedicated to laboratory work. The building will also feature a publicly accessible first floor that includes gallery space and a restaurant. A parking garage will be constructed behind the building.
