Centex Proposes New Residential/Retail Project for East Village

SAN DIEGO, CA-Dallas, TX-based Centex Corp. submits a Centre City development permit application for its planned Laundry Lofts project. The development, which is still going through design changes, is currently proposed as a 208-unit, multifamily project with a 2,000-sf retail component.

SAN DIEGO, CA-Centex Corp. of Dallas, TX is currently hammering out the design of its Laundry Lofts project, having recently submitted a Centre City development permit application for the proposed multifamily/retail complex. The project, which is still going through design changes, may move forward to the design review approval process as early as this August, according to Suzanne Drolet, an associate planner with the Centre City Development Corp.Slated to rise at the corner of 15th Street and Island Avenue in the East Village area of Downtown San Diego, Laundry Lofts may incorporate the historical Old Chinese Laundry structure that stands on the site into its design, Drolet says. The extent of the integration depends on the Historical Resources Board, which is expected to give the Old Chinese Laundry a historical designation by the end of the month. “The HRB may just designate the facade instead of the entire structure,” Drolet tells GlobeSt.com.Thus far, Laundry Lofts has been reviewed by the Centre City Advisory Committee’s pre-design subcommittee, which provides commentary early on in the design process, according to Drolet. She says the project has been well received by the subcommittee, with members saying it will make “a bold statement.” The current design of Laundry Lofts calls for an 18-story structure that will utilize large glass areas, masonry and sky terraces. The project is presently planned to house 208 market-rate apartment units and a 2,000-sf retail component. “This project will improve a site that is ripe for redevelopment, as well as preserve a historical resource,” Drolet says.
