70-000-SF Grocery-Anchored Shopping Center Opens

LA PLATA, MD-The retail options in La Plata just increased, now that the doors of La Plata Plaza have opened up to neighborhood shoppers. Developed by Cincinnati-based real estate firm Phillips Edison & Co., the 70,000-sf shopping center boasts a 58,000-sf Safeway grocery store as its anchor. Tenants occupying the remaining 12,000 sf of space include Blockbuster, Chevy Chase Bank, Mattress Warehouse, and UPS.

Phillips Edison successfully lobbied city officials to have the 33-acre parcel on which La Plata Plaza sits rezoned to accommodate the new retail project. “La Plata Plaza is a fresh and exciting community shopping center with further growth opportunities that will benefit the community, the tenants and Phillips Edison’s investors,” says John Bessey, Phillips Edison’s vice president of development. The property will be expanded in a second development phase, adding 130,000 sf of retail space.
