The ensuing outcry over the riots put pressure on the university to implement a plan to move its students on campus. In the plan it reached with the city, the university will conclude its master lease property program--which currently houses 900 students in 22 different privately owned dwellings in Fenway neighborhoods--within five years.
"The signing of this agreement represents a significant step toward addressing the concerns of the city and the community," says Freeland. "We believe this agreement is a win-win situation for the university, the community, and the city of Boston."
Menino says the university has "come to the table" with the community to respond to its concerns, including housing, off campus rental properties, student behavior and accountability.
As part of the agreement, the university will file plans for the construction of new dormitories that will add 1,250 on-campus beds. The phase-out of the 900 students currently under the master-lease program over five years will be reduced this fall with the utilization of the university's new property located at 10 Coventry Street.
Northeastern has also agreed to increase the amount of on-campus housing, which will free up the neighborhood housing stock and amend its master plan to reflect leased housing. It has also agreed to work with the community to craft a new institutional master plan.
As part of the agreement, the university will file plans for the construction of new dormitories that will add 1,250 new on-campus beds. A spokesperson for the university tells GlobeSt.com that it has not yet been determined how many additional buildings will need to be built to accommodate those students. In its campus in the Fenway two new buildings with approximately 500 beds are coming online this fall. In addition, the university recently acquired a property at 10 Coventry St. that will house 150 students.
