Developed in 1800, the existing Fairfax County Courthouse carries the name of the Jennings Judicial Building and sits at 4000 Chain Bridge Rd. where it presently serves as home base to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The property has official national landmark status, having been the site of Civil War activity under alternate Union and Confederate control in the mid-1800s. Development projects in 1929 and 1953 expanded the structure, but this time around, construction activity will encompass a renovation process that will upgrade the facility up to 21st Century standards.

The neighboring Jennings Judicial Center at 4110 Chain Bridge Rd. escapes historic standing at the age of 22 but it, too, has been designated for improvement. Currently, the Fairfax Circuit Court & Clerks Office, General District Court & Clerks Office, Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, Fairfax Bar Association and Law Library, and the Sheriff's Office all make their home in the building, which will undergo the construction knife to be expanded by an additional 316,000 sf. The new space will include 17 courtrooms, a public law library and extra room for offices. Work on both facilities is expected to reach ultimate completion in early 2008.
