FAIRFAX, VA-A celebrated historic landmark, the Fairfax County Courthouse is scheduled to undergo a major expansion and renovation. County officials will break ground on the project this week, beginning a process that will convert “the old courthouse” into a modern-day judicial facility. The county will spend $94.5 million to complete the project, which will also include the expansion of an adjacent structure.

Developed in 1800, the existing Fairfax County Courthouse carries the name of the Jennings Judicial Building and sits at 4000 Chain Bridge Rd. where it presently serves as home base to the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The property has official national landmark status, having been the site of Civil War activity under alternate Union and Confederate control in the mid-1800s. Development projects in 1929 and 1953 expanded the structure, but this time around, construction activity will encompass a renovation process that will upgrade the facility up to 21st Century standards.
