Verizon Opens 44,000-SF Switching Center

SOUTHFIELD, MI-Verizon Wireless opens a $25-million switching center in an undisclosed technology park suburban Detroit. Security upgrades include a 10,000-gallon diesel tank and a generator that can run for up to 100 hours at a time.

SOUTHFIELD, MI-Verizon Wireless opened a 44,000-sf switching center in an undisclosed technology park here, company officials say. The $25 million in building upgrades is expected to improve reliability for the more than 2.5 million calls that are fielded through it daily, says Mark Emerick, director of Verizon’s Michigan operations.

Emerick expects an additional $10 million to $20 million in new equipment will also be purchased to ensure reliability. Verizon purchased the building last year, but won’t disclose the location, citing security reasons. Verizon currently operates three other Michigan switching centers in metro Detroit.
