Partners has begun negotiations with LDA Acquisitions, LLC to acquire the property, known as parcels 6 and 7, which total 248,000 sf, in the Yard's End section.
MGH, one of the founding members of the Partners HealthCare, is the largest non-government employer in the city, with almost 16,000 employees--more than 2,000 of whom work in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Partners also operates administrative offices in the Navy Yard as well as its Institute of Health Professions.
"This agreement makes way for these long vacant parcels to move forward and soon provide up to 1,000 new jobs in the Charlestown Navy Yard," says city Mayor Thomas M. Menino. "By activating and invigorating Boston's waterfront with a variety of uses, this project will go far in terms of reaching our goals for development in Boston."
The project fits into the BRA's plan to bring active and mixed uses to the Navy Yard. These two parcels have long been planned for commercial uses and were most recently rezoned in 1990 to accommodate research and development uses. The BRA says that this agreement will help further complete its vision for the long vacant Yard's End section, Recently, the nearby Parcel 4, known as Harborview Point, was permitted and is expected to begin construction this fall. The project involves 215 units of housing as well as public improvements.
The Charlestown Navy Yard was decommissioned in 1974 and was acquired by the Boston Redevelopment Authority in 1978. The BRA is involved in an effort to redevelop the area into a mixed-use area, encompassing residential, institutional, retail and public recreational uses.
