"Opening an office in Minneapolis furthers our strategy of locating near clusters of expertise where we possess high levels of knowledge and experience," says SmithGroup senior vice president Rebecca Nolan, who will serve as managing director of the office. "Minnesota's leadership in the health sciences, coupled with the region's reputation for innovation among its Fortune 500 companies, is what attracted us."

Nolan is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, former president of SmithGroup's California operations and serves on the company's board of directors. In addition to her nearly 25 years of experience in architectural practice, her leadership allowed the firm's offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles to become among the company's most successful operations, says SmithGroup president and chief executive officer Carl Roehling.

"With Minneapolis now joining our existing offices in the Midwest US--Chicago, Ann Arbor, [MI], Detroit and Madison, [WI]--we have even greater capacity to serve clients in this region of the country," Roehling adds.

SmithGroup also has offices in Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco and Washington, DC. Recent SmithGroup projects include the 500,000-sf Discovery Communications World Headquarters, Silver Spring, MD; the $1.2-billion McNamara Terminal/Northwest World Gateway at Detroit Metro Airport; and a 434,000-sf biomedical research and teaching building for the University of California-San Francisco.
