Strip Mall Torn Down for $350M Project

ROCKVILLE, MD-Thursday is D-Day for the former Magruder’s Shopping Center on N. Washington St. All equipment has been put in place to demolish the old strip mall in order to make room for the development of the new $350 million mixed-use Rockville Town Square project. Interior demolition has been taking place all week; the actual razing of the building is scheduled to begin with a special ceremony tomorrow.

Project developers, the City of Rockville, RD Rockville LLC, and Federal Realty Investment Trust tapped Whiting-Turner Construction to head up demolition activities. Whiting-Turner’s entire contract for activities pertaining to the development of Rockville Town Square is for a total of $19 million. The last of the 23 tenants of the ill-fated shopping center were just recently relocated.
