The laying of the cornerstone took place on the construction site of the center's gymnasium. "We are pleased that we are on track for opening YouthVille Detroit in late spring 2005," says DYF president and chief executive officer Dr. Gerald K. Smith. "We are also excited that this project will allow us to take a vacant building in a prime location and restore it. It is gratifying that YouthVille will not only play a major role in revitalization of this corner but at the same time provide a safe place for our young people to go after school to avoid risky behavior."
Earlier this year, DYF launched a fund-raising campaign with a goal of raising $14 million in support of YouthVille Detroit. To date, DYF hascommitments for $4.5 million from 20 local and private contributors.
YouthVille Detroit will house a specially designed youth development center for young people, ages 11 to 19, where they can learn new skills and develop positive peer and adult relationships in a safe neighborhood environment. YouthVille Detroit will also be a multi-tenant center, housing 12 youth and family service organizations under one roof.
