YouthVille Detroit Is on Track to Open Next Spring

DETROIT-A 75,000-sf private youth development center at 7375 Woodward in the city's New Center area is at the halfway point of construction. Detroit Youth Foundation has raised $4.5 million for the $14-million project.

DETROIT-The Detroit Youth Foundation has set the cornerstone for YouthVille Detroit, a 75,000-sf youth development center organizers say is designed to be the most comprehensive neighborhood youth development center in the city. The ceremony and a subsequent hard-hat tour marked the mid-construction point of the new facility, located at 7375 Woodward just north of West Grand Boulevard in the city’s New Center area.

The laying of the cornerstone took place on the construction site of the center’s gymnasium. “We are pleased that we are on track for opening YouthVille Detroit in late spring 2005,” says DYF president and chief executive officer Dr. Gerald K. Smith. “We are also excited that this project will allow us to take a vacant building in a prime location and restore it. It is gratifying that YouthVille will not only play a major role in revitalization of this corner but at the same time provide a safe place for our young people to go after school to avoid risky behavior.”
