Flint and Genesee County trail many similarly sized communities in population growth, per capita income and business and employment numbers, says Bill Hartman, president and chief executive officer ofFlint-based Citizens Banking Corp. He is head of a Focus Council committee spearheading the study. The three organizations may be ripe for a merger since they have overlapping goals, board members andcompetition for funding, he adds.
A reshuffling of local economic development efforts has been discussed for years as Flint has struggled to overcome the loss of automotive industry jobs. The boards of the chamber and the Growth Alliance have already voted to support the merger study. No timetable on the merger plan has been set.
