Oakland County Airport Spending $40M

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, MI-The county airport here is building walls and other enclosures in an attempt to lessen the sound impact on its neighbors, which includes more than 100 homes to the north and east.

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, MI-Oakland County International Airport is using about $40 million in federal funds to make improvements to the airport with the goal of becoming a quieter neighbor. The federal money is paying for nine-foot sound walls around parts of the airport, an enclosure where airplanes can test engines, special doors and windows for residents and the purchase of more than 100 homes on the north and eastern sides of the airport.

Residents, however, question how successful the efforts will be because the airport is expanding. Recently, the Williams Lake Homeowners Association aired a list of concerns that include environmental issues. Residents are suggesting the airport initiate noise-limitation levels and restrict flight times.
