While Ambrosino notes that the highway improvement is "long overdue" he says that it is only happening now because of the quarry redevelopment. The $500 million project at full build out involves nearly 2,000 units as well as retail and commercial space. Ambrosino points out that Roseland is donating property from the quarry site for the highway widening and is funding the cost of the design, which is estimated to be $1 million.
The first phase of the redevelopment is currently under construction on the Revere side of the parcel. The Route 1 project will give the site direct access to the highway and allow Roseland to begin work on the Malden side of the property.
