Population Growth Shifts West

ST. PAUL-Blaine overtakes Woodbury as the fastest growing suburb in the Twin Cities. The metropolitan area is expected to add about 500,000 new households by 2030, according to the Metropolitan Council.

ST. PAUL-Population growth is picking up in the Twin Cities area over the last three years, and growth is staying strong in the western suburbs while easing some in the eastern half, according to a new report by the Metropolitan Council. Woodbury, last decade’s leader, is now in 10th place, with its 2,866 new residents an increase less than half the annual average during the 1990s.

Blaine, which has opened up to residential construction in recent years, is the new No. 1 with 5,020 new residents, after not even making the Top 10 list in the 1990s. While the Met Council views as stable the population of the core cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul, some expect those numbers to increase to reflect the loft and condo boom.

Overall, the council estimates, the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area was home to 2.7 million people as of April 2003, having grown by nearly 100,000, or 3.7% since April 2000.
