SAN FRANCISCO-Hotel workers in San Francisco last night voted to authorize a strike, just as hotel workers in Los Angeles and Washington, DC did on Monday. No date has been set for the walkout, which union representatives said would occur only if contract negotiations fail. In San Francisco, about 77% of the 4,000 eligible hotel workers in San Francisco voted, with 97.3% voting to authorize the strike. About three-quarters of the 3,000 housekeepers, bellmen and other workers at nine prominent Los Angeles hotels took part in their vote Monday, with 83% authorizing the strike. In Washington, DC 2,100 workers voted 94% in favor. The union contract expired on Aug. 14. Contract negotiations with the San Francisco Multi-Employer Group were set to resume on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. The group represents 14 hotels employing some 4,000 of the union members. Group president Mark Huntley has said in a statement he is very disappointed in the union’s decision to hold a strike vote. The unions in all three cities have all been insisting on two-year contracts so they would expire at the same time those in several other cities, giving them greater leverage in future negotiations.
