ROYAL OAK, MI-William Beaumont Hospital has opened its $227-million South Tower, part of a continued effort to replace much of the original half-century-old facility. The eight-story South Tower boasts 432 inpatient beds for pediatrics, neuroscience, neonatal intensive care, orthopedic and cancer patients and women’s health.

There are also 16 new operating rooms for orthopedic and neurosurgery, an infusion center and a digital radiology department, 10 procedure rooms for outpatient orthopedic, eye and plastic surgeries, medical and surgical short-stay units. Aesthetically, the tower’s showcase is arguably the Debra Saber-Salisbury Memorial Garden, a sky-lit indoor garden featuring native Michigan trees and plants. A $1 million donation from David Salisbury of Orchard Lake in memory of his wife, who died in June 2003, made the garden possible.

Community donations to the Children’s Miracle Network also funded a 4,000-sf indoor Pediatric Garden for hospitalized children. Additionally, individuals, foundations and corporations gave more than $20 million in donations to support the tower’s creation. Among them: a $5-million gift from the Carls Foundation to create the 40-bed William & Marie Carls Children’s Medical Center and a $5-million gift from former Ford Motor Co. Chairman Harold Poling and his wife Marian to create the 66-bed Harold & Marian Poling Neuroscience Center.
