Mayor Imposes Gas Station Moratorium

DETROIT-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has put a two-year moratorium on the development of gasoline stations in new locations. New gasoline stations can open on closed or abandoned sites.

DETROIT-Plagued by scores of vacant gas stations around the city, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has issued an executive order banning gasoline stations from opening in new locales in the Motor City. The two-year moratorium does not apply to business owners who wish to open stations on closed or abandoned station sites, but is aimed at stopping new stores from popping up across the city’s landscape.

“Too many stations have been abandoned,” Kilpatrick says. “Many that remain have become eyesores in our neighborhoods. Before we green-light new locations, existing stations must be cleaned up and our planning and building departments must assess if and where new stations are needed.”

City officials say there are 379 gasoline stations in the city. Figures released by the mayor’s office reveal 68 stations have closed since 1998, while 74 new ones have opened. Most of the closed stations were abandoned.
