Bob Douglas, Wilmington's assistant director of conservation planning, tells GlobeSt.com that Mills has not made a formal proposal, but has indicated to the town that it wants to build two hotels on part of the 38-acre parcel that it is acquiring to build the mall. Part of that property that Mills will buy from Perkins Development Trust if its plan for the mall is fully permitted is in Wilmington. The hotels will reportedly each consist of 120 rooms. Douglas notes that the property in Wilmington is currently largely wooded.
Calls to Mills Corp. were not returned by deadline, but a zoning change required for the mall was approved this past May. Because of its size, the retail complex cannot move forward though without the state's approval of the zoning change as well as the environmental approval. But most significantly, the federal and state governments need to approve the development of a new interchange on Route 93.
Douglas points out that the development of the hotels will probably also be dependent on the approval of the highway interchange as well as the approval to build a road to access the site.
