BOSTON-The Boston Redevelopment Authority gave the go ahead to Boston Freight Terminal’s proposal to build International Cargo Center of New England, a 305,000-sf facility on a nine-acre parcel in the Boston Marine Industrial Park in South Boston near the Fleet Center pavilion. A communications coordinator for the BRA tells GlobeSt.com that Boston Freight Terminals wants to raze three buildings that are currently on the parcel and build a new larger building that can be used as a mixed-use cargo transportation center. The project is estimated to cost $44 million.
Boston Freight Terminals has been a tenant of Economic Development Industrial Corp., a subsidiary of the BRA which owns the industrial park, for approximately 11 years. The proposal from Boston Freight involves 6 Harbor St., where Boston Freight currently leases both floors of the two story building. Boston Freight only occupies the first floor and the Toys for Tots program occupies a small portion of the second floor. The balance of the second floor is vacant and not useable as the building is in need of significant capital improvements.
Six Drydock Ave. is a multi-tenanted building under the control of EDIC. British Airways is the largest tenant occupying more than two-thirds of the building and the balance is divided into four office suites. Three of the office suites are vacant, and one is occupied by BOC International Inc. Ten Drydock Ave. is a multi-tenanted building also under the control of EDIC. The building’s tenants include: First Trade Union Bank, theCarpenter’s Union and EDIC BMIP Administrative offices. The building was renovated by EDIC in 1980.
