PORTLAND-The paddle sports company WaterMark is relocating its headquarters to the Portland region from Arcata, a small beach community on Humbolt Bay in Northern California. The company’s chief executive Jim Clark says 70 of the company’s 100 employees there have been asked to make the move during the first half of 2005.WaterMark is reportedly looking to secure a home in Beaverton or Hillsboro, where vacancy remains high and good deals are plentiful. The company has not said how much and what type of space it is seeking, and executives there were not available Thursday for further comment. Based on the number of people and the possible need for warehouse space, the company will likely lease somewhere between 15,000 sf and 30,000 sf. WaterMark is a maker of kayaks and more recently expanded into racks and storage products with the acquisition of brands like Yakima. Clark says the move is part of a strategy to ensure the company remains competitive. Part of that strategy was to move certain business functions to a new location with access to a major transportation hub and a large labor pool. Clark says the company will maintain a portion of its operations in Arcata and recently renewed the lease on its facility there.
