HAMBURG TOWNSHIP, MI-The Zukey Lake Tavern, a popular eatery in growing Livingston County, will double in size to 14,000 sf. Zukey Lake Tavern overlooks Zukey Lake on Gerard Street, off M-36.
The establishment opened as a grocery store and tavern decades ago, says Rick Glazer, co-owner of the restaurant. "I believe it came into existence just after Prohibition," he adds. Glazer and his partner, Chuck Plante, bought the establishment 25 years ago.
The township is Livingston County's largest municipality with 20,627 residents, according to the 2000 census. The chain of lakes on the Huron River is one of the main draws for new residents. Therestaurant had to expand to meet demand caused by growth in the township and the increasingly popular boating season, Glazer says.
Glazer and Plante demolished an old house adjacent to the restaurant this year to make room for the expansion.
