County and Konterra Work Out Property Exchange

ROCKVILLE, MD-The county has put together an equally beneficial deal with Konterra Limited Partnership, leaving both parties in far better positions. In a land swap deal, Konterra will exchange a half-acre of its two-acre property in Kensington for a two-acre county-owned site in Rockville. Konterra will ultimately set up operations in a new plant on the unimproved lot on Southlawn Lane; while Montgomery County officials will make the space a parking lot, and eventually, a retail element, for eager Kensington residents on the Metropolitan Ave. land it is taking off Konterra’s hands. The Konterra property, home to a cement facility, made it onto the county’s List of condemned structures in May.

“This land swap agreement is truly a win-win exchange for the county, the town of Kensington and Konterra,” says county executive Douglas M. Duncan. “Kensington gets an eyesore demolished and replaced with a much-needed parking lot and retail development, while Konterra gets a much more appropriate location to continue its business. Since the land exchange is not even in terms of acreage, Konterra is equalizing the situation by building the parking lot for the county.
