SEATTLE-Locally based Mackay Restaurant Group will open its first hotel and its seventh restaurant early next year. The owner and operator of El Gaucho, Waterfront Seafood Grill, Troiani and Rippe’s-branded restaurants is gearing up to open a luxury, 18-suite hotel above its El Gaucho restaurant in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood and a 6,300-sf restaurant in the new Rainier Pacific Building in Downtown Tacoma. The hotel is slated to open in January, the new restaurant in March.Chad Mackay tells GlobeSt.com the company master leased the three-story, 30,000-sf building its Belltown restaurant is located in in July and holds an option to purchase it outright. Mackay says hotel guests not only will be able to eat El Gaucho’s food in the restaurant or in their room, they won’t even have to leave the building for an entertaining night out given the building’s other establishments, a basement jazz club (Pampas Room) that is owned by Mackay and a 40-seat theater called Big Picture. The new Tacoma restaurant also will be well located, as the Rainier Pacific Building is located across from the city’s new convention center and a Marriott hotel. The restaurant, which will be located on the ground floor, has not yet been named but will be a seafood concept. Mackay says that the new restaurant may incorporate some features of its Waterfront Seafood Grill brand, but will not duplicate that concept or have the same name.Mackay Restaurant Group’s restaurants are located in the Puget Sound region save for one, an El Gaucho restaurant located in Portland, OR. While no new hotels are planned in the near future, Mackay tells GlobeSt.com the company is gearing up to open two new restaurants per year, and to venture further down the West Coast. “We are actively looking in San Diego and in Los Angeles near Staples Arena,” says Mackay, “We will break out of the Northwest next year.”
