OKLAHOMA, CITY, OK-Concurrent with the opening of a temporary customer contact center in Hertz Financial Center here, Dell firms up plans for construction of a permanent location on 60 acres elsewhere in the city to keep up with growth. The Round Rock, TX-based computer maker says dirt will start moving for the new 120,000-sf facility next month, with completion expected in summer 2005.Plans for the new development were announced on Friday at ceremonies marking the opening of the temporary location. A company spokesperson tells GlobeSt.com that the permanent location will be constructed on a site about four miles from Downtown on the Oklahoma River, near the intersection of Interstates 40 and 44.Dell officials said the impetus for the expansion project was the company’s continued growth in combination with the local labor pool. Last July, Dell said it expected to employ 250 in the city. The company now says it will employ 700 by the end of the year. “The quality of the local workforce has enabled us to expand our business plan and increase the number of Oklahoma City employees we need to serve our customers,” says Ro Parra, senior vice president and general manager of Dell Americas. “In fact, we have expanded the scope of work for our team members in Oklahoma City. In addition to working with business and individual consumer customers, a team of customer experience representatives has been added.”Oklahoma City is one of three North American expansion projects announced by Dell this year. A customer contact center in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was announced in July, and a fulfillment center in West Chester, OH, in partnership with APL Logistics, was announced earlier this month.
