According to Balfour, the Burj Mall will incorporate 14 million sf (1.3 million sm) of shopping space over four floors and will include the world's largest gold souk (market) and an atrium with a three-story aquarium. It is anticipated that the mall will attract 35 million visitors in its first full year.

Completion of the mall is scheduled for the end of 2006. The general contractor is Dutco Balfour Beatty, Balfour Betty's jointly owned civil engineering business in the UAE. Dutco Balfour Beatty will execute the contract in partnership with Al Ghandi/CCC.

The mall will be part of a major new mixed-use complex that will include as its centerpiece the 2,300-foot (700-meter) Burj Tower, the tallest office building in the world. Designed by Chicago-based Skidmore Owings & Merrill, the $1-billion, 5-million-sf office building is under construction and slated for completion in 2008. The project and construction manager is Turner International Construction.

The overall project, The Burj Dubai, will be viewed and discussed by public officials, academics and industry professionals at the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Fall Meeting in New York. The event begins today and concludes on November 5, 2004.
