The hall's only permanent display now is plaques in a back hallway at the Cobo Center in Detroit. The 35,000-sf to 40,000-sf space could also serve as a meeting location to help fund the museum's operation.
"Unless you're walking between Joe Louis and Cobo for a Red Wings game, chances are you never see the (hall of fame) plaques," says executive director Jim Stark. A timetable on when a possible hall of fame could be built and opened has not yet been announced.
The organization has long operated independently, Stark adds. "We're trying to bring all of the stakeholders together so that the hall of fame belongs to everybody," he says.
So far, MSU and UM have committed an undisclosed amount and their help, Stark says. But the hall of fame still is in discussions with the Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons, Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers.
Stark says the organization brought in about $205,000 for fiscal 2004, up from gross receipts of $161,677 last year.
