BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI-The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame Inc. plans to launch a $5-million to $7-million capital campaign early next year to fund a permanent, interactive museum in Detroit. The 50-year-old Bloomfield Hills-based organization is considering locations at Ford Field, the Renaissance Center, the Michigan State Fairgrounds and other locations around the city.

The hall’s only permanent display now is plaques in a back hallway at the Cobo Center in Detroit. The 35,000-sf to 40,000-sf space could also serve as a meeting location to help fund the museum’s operation.

“Unless you’re walking between Joe Louis and Cobo for a Red Wings game, chances are you never see the (hall of fame) plaques,” says executive director Jim Stark. A timetable on when a possible hall of fame could be built and opened has not yet been announced.
