LINCOLN PARK, MI-Meijer has opened a new prototype store in this Detroit suburb. The 207,000-sf store features a bank, hair salon, photo studio and drive-up pharmacy.

The store also features a new color scheme, a different system of merchandise display and other upgrades. Grand Rapids-based Meijerhas 163 stores in its chain. About half are in Michigan.

The opening of the new prototype comes as retailer is working on plans to renovate many of its existing stores using the new design concepts, which it began testing in the Grand Rapids area earlier in the year. The new store, on Dix Highway near Interstate 75, is located in a former Kmart store, which has been empty for more than a year. It is the first Meijer in metro Detroit with the new concept, which was developed by New York designer and architect David Rockwell.

Rockwell also developed the look of the Planet Hollywood Restaurants and has been working with Meijer of designing a display for its home line products.

The new Lincoln Park store has about 500 employees, some of them former Kmart workers.
