City Moving to Redevelop Northwest Side Corner

CHICAGO-Redevelopment proposals for the northwest corner of Irving Park Road and Kedzie Avenue have come and gone, but the city is moving toward getting acquisition authority.

CHICAGO-The city’s department of planning and development is targeting the northwest corner of Irving Park Road and Kedzie Avenue for potential redevelopment. Although redevelopment proposals for the Northwest Side intersection have come and gone, the plan commission recently took the first step toward giving city officials authority to acquire several vacant lots and buildings through condemnation, if necessary.

The plan commission recommended 10 parcels be added to the Irving Park/Kedzie redevelopment plan. Another nine on the southeast corner of the intersection already were targeted. The first step, according to department of planning and development officials, will be to get appraisals of the property to determine the corner’s feasibility for redevelopment.

A 70-year-old, 8,900-sf building at the northwest corner has been vacant for four years, according to department of planning and development officials. Further north on Kedzie Avenue, a restaurant is open on weekends only. Continuing on Kedzie Avenue, the block includes an auto lot, vacant building and four-story storage building with some office space, officials report.
