Southfield-based Schostak Bros. proposed a hotel for the site last year and also would like to include an office tower that would house the Jim Fresard Pontiac-Buick auto showroom on the first floor. The dealership is now about a mile north of the site. If approved, adjacent parking decks allow for new car storage.
Restaurateur Jon Carlson, who last year opened the Bastone and Café Habana restaurants on South Main at 5th, has proposed the second hotel--a boutique establishment over his restaurants. Carlson's idea, presented by a partner, developer Robert Wolfson of Farmington Hills, would connect in the rear to a city-owned parking lot, turning it into a ground floor of shops topped by four stories of parking and a three-story cap of offices.
Both proposals must pass reviews by the city plan commission, and the Royal Oak city commission.
