Anthrax Vaccine Maker Will Open in Converted 150,000-SF Building

FREDERICK, MD-Further enhancing its status as a biotechnology hotbed, the State of Maryland has come up with a $10 million incentive package to assist in Emergent BioLogics Inc.’s development of a new vaccine manufacturing facility, which will ultimately create 300 new jobs. The company, a division of Lansing, MI’s BioPort, will convert the existing 150,000-sf structure at 7114 Geoffrey Way into a high-tech facility that will serve as the second location in the nation for the manufacturing of BioThrax, the only anthrax vaccine approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

In an effort to assist in the redevelopment project, the State of Maryland has offered Emergent BioLogics a $2.5 million conditional loan from the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Fund, and a Maryland Industrial Development Financing Authority package of $7.5 million in loan guarantees. “The decision to locate the new Emergent BioLogics manufacturing facility in Frederick County is a tremendous win for both the county and the state,” Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. says.
