Dental Facility Receives Makeover

CARLSBAD, CA-Zimmer Dental, a manufacturer of dental implant systems, has seen a complete overhaul of its new corporate headquarters. The two-story, 72,425-sf property had $2.5 million in tenant improvements, according to a company official for San Diego-based Smith Consulting Architects, who oversaw the work.Karen Tom, interior project manager with Smith Consulting, tells Globest.com that “the building was a shell and we built out the entire property.” Included in the improvements was everything from ceilings and walls to lighting, according to Tom.Located at 6221 El Camino Real, in Carlsbad, the facility provides space for tooling machines used to manufacture parts, and also has a coating area with kilns, used to create dental implants. “While most of the facility is used for manufacturing, another 30,000 sf is office space used for training for dentists,” Tom tells Globest.com. The training areas are located on the second floor, “along with conference and presentation rooms,” according to a company report.Rreef, the property’s owner and property manager, hired Smith Consulting to provide complete architectural services for the project. Good & Roberts served as the general contractor. Along with Tom as interior project manager, Scott Cairns served as principal-in-charge for Smith Consulting Architects. Other consultants included Prime Structural, structural engineer; MPE, electrical engineer; McParlane & Associates, mechanical engineer; ERMI Inc., technical report assistance; and Daryl K. James & Associates, preparation of the fire technical report. There may be more work in store for Zimmer Dental, according to Tom. “They’re looking at more space for a possible expansion.”The Zimmer Dental tenant improvements is just one of the current projects for Smith Consulting, according to Tom, and serves as a barometer for the strong demand for construction jobs in San Diego County. “We’re very busy and don’t see any decline in the near future,” says Tom.
