SHERWOOD, OR-Howard S. Wright Construction will launch construction this month on a new library and civic building here that city officials hope will act as a catalyst for additional redevelopment. The $10-million project (including land costs) will be the first new building in Old Town in some 30 years, Sherwood city manager Ross Schultz tells GlobeSt.com. The 33,000-sf building will rise at Northeast Oregon and Northwest Pine streets in the city’s Old Town district. The site is across the street from a 6.4-acre former cannery that the city acquired from Bob Jones Enterprises for $1.8 million and hopes to see redeveloped with high-density residential and retail beginning in 2006, says Schultz. Adding to the flurry of activity is a multi-million dollar streetscape improvement project that is scheduled to get under way later this year. The Sherwood Urban Renewal Policy Advisory Committee will make a recommendation at its Jan. 19 meeting as to how much the city can afford to spend on the streets plan. Last year, the city completed a new police building on Southwest Borchers Drive, near Oregon 99W. The construction timeline for the new civic building is 18 months. However, Schultz says the general contractor thinks it may be able to complete the project in 12 months.
