The building is expected to be completed in April or May, with the university to move in immediately thereafter, says Ted Blashak, vicepresident for Michigan for school. "We have already started our faculty recruitment for the new location," Blashak adds.

U-P has been offering classes at the Best Western Sterling Inn and currently has 138 students enrolled in programs there. Blashak says while it is difficult to make an exact prediction on future enrollments at the new Clinton Township location, he expects 500 to 1,000 students to be enrolled there in a few years.

U-P's announcement is the second major higher education expansion in Clinton Township in 2004. Earlier this year, Baker College purchased a former automobile dealership on Gratiot and opened a new technology and admissions center to complement its existing location on 15 Mile Road in the township.

Clinton Township is also home to Macomb Community College's Center Campus and the college's University Center, where almost a dozen universities offer a variety of bachelor's and master's degree programs. The 11-classroom U-P building will have room for up to 25 staff personnel who will assist students with enrollment, financial aid and other needs.

"Our core student population is working moms and dads, taking classes 6 to 10 p.m. one or more nights a week," Blashak says. He adds he expects the Clinton Township location to develop similar to U-P's Troy campus. There, an enrollment of about 100 students in temporary spaces about five years ago has grown to about 1,000 today.
