ROGERS, MN-Cabela's is negotiating to open a 185,000-sf store on 40 acres in this town about 35 miles from the Twin Cities. The Sidney, NE-based outdoors sporting goods retailer says the new store would be even larger and closer to the Twin Cities than its 150,000-sf in Owatonna and far larger and closer than its 59,000-sf store in East Grand Forks.

"Our comprehensive market research showed that Rogers is an ideal location and such a great opportunity for Cabela's that it just makes sense for us to add a third store in the state," says Dennis Highby, Cabela's president and chief executive officer, who grew up in Minnesota. The store would be located next to the well-traveled Interstate 94 and Highway 101 intersection, which serves as the gateway to the huge expanse of sporting opportunities in the middle and upper regions of the state--including Mille Lacs and the entire Minnesota lake country. Also, thousands also pass through the area on their way to hunting, camping and fishing trips in Canada.

The Rogers City Council is being asked to rezone the site, approve the development plan and determine how to treat the wetlands on the property. A meeting is scheduled between Cabela's and the city later this month. If an agreement is reached, construction is expected to begin as soon as possible, Highby says.

The Rogers store would be built in Cabela's trademark style mixing a decor of museum-quality animal displays with dioramas, aquariums stocked with native fish and an indoor mountain displaying trophy animals interacting in recreations of their natural habitats. To operate the new store, Cabela's says it plans to hire from 350 to 400 workers.
