Fifty acres of the site are proposed for development and 34 acres of adjoining wetlands would remain undeveloped. Park Nicollet currently holds an option to purchase the 84-acre site, which does not require transportation upgrades for access, hospital officials say.
A little over a month ago, Park Nicollet and Allina submitted their application to the Department of Health for an exemption to the moratorium for a 250-bed hospital to be developed in two phases. Phase I would include 60 to 100 beds with a targeted completion of 2008. The second phase would include an additional 100 to 150 beds with a targeted completion date of 2012.
The Department of Health will make a recommendation to the state legislature for consideration during the 2005 legislative session. Hospital officials say this three-way collaboration will offer residents in the northwest suburbs direct access to the largest number of highly specialized physicians of any hospital in the Twin Cities, according to Children's Hospital officials.
"In an area where young families with children comprise one of the fastest growing demographic groups, Children's will bring to Maple Grove much needed ambulatory and acute care pediatric services," says Alan Goldbloom, president and chief executive officer of Children's Hospitals and Clinics.
The proposed medical campus is an extension of the three organizations' service to residents in the Maple Grove area, says Dick Pettingill, president and chief executive officer of Allina Hospital and Clinics. More than 40% people needing hospital services from the community use one of the facilities of one of the three providers.
Park Nicollet and Allina announced their collaboration in August. A new hospital as part of the Children's, Allina and Park Nicollet medical campus in Maple Grove would require an exemption to the legislative moratorium on building new hospital beds in Minnesota.
