Kindercare Buyer Moving People In, Not Out

PORTLAND-Knowledge Learning Corp. of Golden, CO, which last week acquired locally based Kindercare for more than $1 billion in cash and debt, is moving its headquarters to the city where Kindercare already leases 76,000 sf of office space and employs 300 people.

PORTLAND-Knowledge Learning Corp. of Golden, CO will soon be headquartered in the city. One week after paying more than $1 billion in cash and debt for locally based Kindercare Learning Centers Inc., the provider of early childhood education programs and services says it will relocate the combined company’s headquarters in the coming months.Kindercare is one of the nation’s largest providers of early childhood education and care with more than 1,200 centers in 39 states. By comparison, Knowledge Learning has about 700 locations. The combined company employs some 41,000 people nationwide.Knowledge Learning’s decision to relocate its headquarters here keeps 300 jobs in Portland and adds potentially another 100 jobs as the company relocates or replaces staff from its operations in Golden and San Rafael, CA. To entice Knowledge Learning to move here, the Oregon Economic & Community Development Department offered up an as yet unrevealed economic incentive package. The incentives likely will include funding for employee training or re-training.Kindercare occupies five floors, or about 76,000 sf in Liberty Centre, a 277,000-sf, 17-story class A office building in the city’s Lloyd District that is owned by Ashforth Pacific and anchor tenant Liberty Northwest Insurance. Doug Pugh, Ashforth’s SVP of leasing and investment, tells GlobeSt.com that while there is only about 4,000 sf in the building that is currently vacant, a couple of other leases are coming due that would allow it to accommodate Knowledge Learning within the building.
