ST. LOUIS-The nonprofit Center of Research, Technology and Entrepreneurial Exchange has started construction of a 170,000-sf research lab and office building in Midtown that will be complete by year’s end. The $36-million development has been 50% preleased by Washington University Medical School and Stereotaxis, Inc., a biotechnology company that recently completed an initial public stock offering. The Center of Research, Technology and Entrepreneurial Exchange, or Cortex, was established in 2002 through a collaboration of Washington University, Saint Louis University, the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation, the University of Missouri-St. Louis and the Missouri Botanical Garden. The goal is to spur the region’s emerging biotechnology industry by providing space for growing companies. The three-story building is being designed and built by Forum Studio (architect of record), HOK’s Science + Technology practice and Clayco Construction Co. (design and construction manager). The team will pursue LEED (Leadership in Energy and Design) certification from the US Green Building Council. The north side of the building will have a glass cantilevered facade. The south facade will be constructed of site-cast concrete wall panels set at varying angles from the perpendicular. A three-story atrium lobby will be finished in stone, wood and fabric.
