REDMOND, WA-The public can get a more detailed look at Microsoft’s 2.2-million-sf headquarters expansion plan this week by attending an open house the company is hosting Thursday night. The event is the first public review connected to Microsoft’s proposed development agreement with the City of Redmond, which if approved would streamline the building-permit process for the company in the years to come. The agreement would direct some 2.8 million sf of planned new development on the campus over the next 10 to 20 years. Minus the demolition of some buildings, the net gain in space would be about 2.2 million sf (not including parking garages), which Microsoft says could accommodate another 10,000 to 12,000 employees. The open house will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in Microsoft Building 122, the former Spacelabs facility at 15120 N.E. 40th St., just west of Highway 520. The Redmond City Council is scheduled to consider the request next month. With eight million sf built already, the Microsoft campus is one of the largest in the world. The company announced its plans to expand the campus earlier this month ( Click here for previous article ). Design of the first new building is slated to begin this year, with occupancy scheduled for 2007. It will be located near its six original buildings on the Redmond campus.
