Army Opens Renovated Barracks at Base

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, MI-A renovated barracks is one of several projects under development at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. A medical training facility and dining hall also are in the works.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, MI-The US Army has opened a renovated barracks at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, part of a flurry of buildingactivity that has been taken place on the base over the past year. “This is all about making life better for our soldiers,” says Brig. Gen. Mike Lenaers, commanding officer of the Army’s Detroit Arsenal, which operates part of the infrastructure on the Air Guard base.

The quarters, renovated for $4.1 million over the past 18 months, has room for 38 active duty military personnel and will replace older quarters on the base that were built in 1951. The Army says the rooms at the quarters were constructed so there is room for two soldiers, if needed.

Lenaers and other Army brass cut a ribbon this week and toured a childdevelopment center in a family housing area that underwent about $5,000 worth of reconstruction late last year to formally open that facility.
