MINNEAPOLIS-Gander Mountain Co., the outdoor sporting goods store based here, has signed leases for eight new outdoor lifestyle specialty stores, including one in Duluth, to open in the spring of 2005. Gander Mountain is a specialty retailer catering to outdoor lifestyle enthusiasts with a particular focus on hunting, fishing and camping.

The company plans to open from 18 to 22 new stores this year, including the eight this spring. "The Duluth store replaces a smaller store in response to strong customer demand for our products and services," says Mark Baker, president and chief executive officer of Gander Mountain.

The new stores, scheduled to open in April and May, include three in Texas--one in Beaumont, with Spring and Sugarland in the Houston market. The others are in Dayton, OH; Terre Haute, IN; Kingston, NY; and Thornton, CO.

All of the stores are at least 55,000 sf, not including outside selling space. They will offer ATV sales and service, an in-store professional gunsmith, a full-service archery shop with shooting lanes and a Gander Lodge meeting space available to local organizations free of charge. There are currently 82 Gander Mountain outdoor lifestyle stores in 14 states.
