An H&M spokeswoman would not reveal how many US stores the company plans to open out of its 145 to 155 new units around the world this year. But she did say that H&M considers the United States one if its "major expansion markets." "We see a lot of potential in that market," she said.
H&M opened nine stores in the United States last year. During its Q4, the company opened five US units.
Its West Coast flagship store, to open in the fall, will be a 43,000-sf unit in San Francisco's Union Square shopping district. The chain opened its first US store, a flagship location on New York City's Fifth Avenue in 2000.
H&M is also entering two new non-US markets this year, Ireland, where it will open three stores and Hungary, which will get one unit. Besides its US stores, last year the company opened 127 units, 34 in Germany, 13 in Spain, 12 in the United Kingdom, 11 in France, nine in Poland, six each in Norway, the Netherlands and Finland, two each in Denmark, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy and Slovenia and one in Luxembourg. H&M operates 1,068 stores worldwide.
