STILLWATER, MN-Saks Inc. will relocate and expand its Herberger's store here, leaving its long-time location at St. Croix Mall. In October, Herberger's will close its 67,300-sf store and move to a nearby 95,400-sf freestanding location.

Andersen Corp., the window manufacturer based in nearby Bayport, is vacating the new location. Saks plans to renovate the space over the spring and summer, and have it ready for a move by October. Saks officials say that "Stillwater is a great market" for Herberger's, and that justifies expanding the store by about 50%.

Saks officials say the new store will be its "new showcase Herberger's," featuring an expanded assortment of the brands and fashion leadership, says Michael MacDonald, chairman and chief executive officer of Saks' subsidiary Carson Pirie Scott & Co., which includes Herberger's. Herberger's, which is based in St. Cloud, has 16 Herberger's stores throughout Minnesota, and 40 stores overall, including stores in such states as Colorado, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Meanwhile, company officials decline to comment on recent speculation that Saks would sell or spin off the department store chain that includes Younkers, Herberger's and Carson Pirie Scott.
