Gas stations lead all sectors with a 14.6 year-over-year sales increase in January, followed by building material and garden supplies dealers, which posted a 10.8% jump. Also reporting strong gains were general merchandise stores, up 6.1%, and restaurants and other food service establishments, up 5.8%.
The sectors with the biggest losses were sporting goods, book, and hobby stores, down 1.8%, and electronics and appliance sales, down 1.2%. Furniture and home furnishings stores were down 0.2 year-over-year.
Clothing stores had a 2.1% gain, while department stores climbed 0.7%.
Year-over-year same-store sales in January were up 3.6%, according to an International Council of Shopping Centers survey released earlier this month. Luxury stores led all categories in the report, with a 8.6% gain.
