Suburbs Get Help Preparing for Redevelopment

DETROIT-Eastpointe, River Rouge, Hazel Park, Southfield, Ypsilanti and Taylor are the first suburbs to get help preparing for redevelopment. Michigan Suburbs Alliance sponsors the program with help from Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Michigan Economic Development Corp.

DETROIT-The suburbs of Eastpointe, River Rouge, Hazel Park, Southfield, Ypsilanti and Taylor have each been selected to receive $30,000 worth of technical assistance to help them become “redevelopment ready.” The “redevelopment-ready community” program is a new initiative developed by the Michigan Suburbs Alliance.

The goal is to streamline the administrative process that developers encounter when planning projects, says Conan Smith, executive director of the alliance. Maxine Berman, director of special projects for Gov. Jennifer Granholm and a member of the redevelopment-ready committee, says the certification will signal to developers “that there’s a transparent process; that it’s going to be much faster, much cleaner.”
