BEAVERTON, OR-The Kohl’s department store chain is considering an alternate location here for a 100,000-sf store. Company officials have asked city officials here to put on hold for 30 days the company’s application for a store near Washington Square mall while it considers a former HomeBase site further north on Oregon 217 near Beaverton Town Square.Based in Menomonee Falls, WI, the publicly traded department store chain has no stores in the Northwest yet, but reportedly plans to open some 15 stores by mid-year 2006. In the Greater Portland area, the company has sought approval for locations in Beaverton, Wood Village and Clackamas. A company official could not be reached Thursday for comment.Joe Grillo, Beaverton’s community development director, tells GlobeSt.com that the would-be shift in sites came after Kohl’s received comments back from the state Department of Transportation about traffic mitigation measures that may be required. Exactly what traffic improvements were mentioned wasn’t immediately available, “but it must have given them some pause,” says Grillo. The Washington Square-area site is immediately west of Oregon 217, north of Scholls Ferry Road and south of Hall Boulevard. The alternate site, home to a vacant HomeBase home improvement store, is located immediately east of 217 and north of Canyon Road.
