BOSTON-The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority has issued a request for proposals for the development of the historic Bulfinch Triangle area across from North Station. The five parcels are available for a mix of residential, office, hotel and retail use. Under the 1997 legislation creating the Metropolitan Highway System, the Turnpike Authority was directed to oversee development along the Greenway.

"The development of these parcels, along with the reconstruction of the nearby surface streets and sidewalks as part of the Big Dig, will help restore a historic district that was designed by the great early American architect Charles Bulfinch before being razed to make way for the Central Artery," says MTA chairman Matthew J. Amorello.

The guidelines developed by the Boston Redevelopment Authority also include a specific interest in encouraging the development of a full-service supermarket to serve the North End, West End and Beacon Hill. "These parcels lend themselves to residential development and retail uses," adds Amorello. "We are very interested in bringing a supermarket to the area to serve the surrounding neighborhoods."

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has recently offered two of its parcels for development. The Turnpike and the MBTA are coordinating on the initiative. Proposals are due on May 3 and developers will make presentations to the advisory committee as well as the Central Artery Completion Task Force. Projects will be subject to city zoning regulations and the state's environmental review process.

In December 2003, The YMCA of Greater Boston's proposal to build a community center in the North End was the preferred use of parcel six along the Central Artery corridor. The YMCA wants to build a five-story, 125,000-sf building that would include two swimming pools, a gymnasium, a health and wellness center, rooftop play area and running track. Parcel Six was the first developable parcel along the Greenway that is being created by the Big Dig.
